The New Century Players, a Milwaukie-based community theater group, wished to honor the 100th anniversary of the passage of the 19th amendment which guarantees women the right to vote.  Portland author John Richard Trtek wrote There I Take My Stand, a portrait of 19th century women’s rights advocate Abigail Scott Duniway and her brother Harvey Scott, long-time editor of The Oregonian. The play revolves around the issue of women’s suffrage which divided the two, and features dialogue drawn from the pair’s own writings and remarks.

“Although the play is set in Oregon in the early 1900s, it is still relevant as voters’ rights remain a problem,” said Julie Akers, director, noting that voters of color don’t have the same access to polls as white voters.

Elisabeth Goebel, managing director of NCP and an Oak Grove resident, plays Duniway in the production, and Colton resident Ron K. Palmblad plays the role of Duniway’s brother. The two actors will present a staged reading of There I Take My Stand at the Milwaukie Community Center. The cast and author will be available afterward for a talk back.
